Just before Christmas, I received an early present in the form of the fantastic book - 'The Lost Football Grounds of Essex' by Jon Weaver. Jon a Braintree fan has also been involved in Groundtastic, the football grounds bible.
This book is one in a series from Mike Floate and can be ordered with many other Football ground books from here.
There is also a link to Mike's website on the right of this blog.
The Essex book includes information on 230 old grounds and 168 clubs.
just after reading the book, I took the train journey in to Liverpool Street from Ipswich, and as I went through Romford I took more notice than normal at the Romford Greyhound Stadium and the Brewery Shopping Centre after reading about their former footballing days. Then from looking at former Football stadia I found myself looking at the 2012 Olympic Park/building site in Stratford.
The book is not just a look back at the former football grounds of Essex but is also a record of the early history of our great game not only in rural Essex but also in East London.
Well worth a read and a purchase as you will keep on going back to the book to check some fact or the other.
