Somehow we are even getting worse!

Monday 22 April 2019, Ipswich Town 0 Swansea City 1 - Championship, Portman Road

A lap of appreciation? We have to start the season well or by October any good will in the club will be gone.

Cup Final on their minds?

Saturday 20 April 2019, Bildeston Rangers 1 Ransomes Sports 4 - Suffolk and Ipswich league, Division One, Consent Lane

Chose Bildeston as I thought it would be a close game as Bildeston still have a chance of promotion, however, it seemed going up was the last thing on their minds.

Ransomes

The Rangers have also qualified for the Suffolk Junior Cup Final at Portman Road and the performance and score line indicates that the final was more important to many than being promoted!

If they play like this at Portman road, it will just be runners up medals that they will be collecting.

Consent Lane is down a windy country lane but when you arrive you find a very modern pavilion and also some of the tastiest burgers you will find and just £2.

Best part of the ground are the two small wooden dugouts and the entry to the ground over a small wooden bridge from the local nature trail.

Old and New

Good Friday 19 April 2019, York City 2 Spennymoor Town 3 - National League (North), Bootham Crescent and then Harborough Town 2 Cogenhoe United 2 - UCL Premier Division, Bowden Park

One extreme to another, from an 'old school' ground to a new G4 out of town stadium, but both games had things in common- excitement, good goals and good playing surfaces.

York City, was a chance to visit Bootham Crescent before it comes under the demolition ball in the coming months ( or years). I can see why people like it, it is a flashback to 1970's league grounds, terracing a variety of stands but also some thing that we do want to forget - stinking urinals and expensive food!

What I did like was how the ground has a real inner city feel, hemmed in by neat streets of Victorian terraced houses. What was not a flashback to the 70;s was the immaculate playing surface and it helped both teams play good football with the visitors eventually coming out on top.

Harborough was an out of town ground, no houses at all to be seen, next to the rugby club and large car park. Inside, plenty of space, 3 very small boring stands but a good modern clubhouse with great food on offer then the final bit of the jigsaw, the latest G4 surface.

We also witnessed another good game, with cracking goals and a last minute equaliser by the visitors.

So two very different grounds however both had more positives than negatives.

Sad - very sad day!

Back to winning ways

Thursday 11 April 2019, Ipswich Town Under 23s 2 Watford Under 23s 1 - Professional Development League, Playford Road Training Ground

After a defeat at Leeds, Ipswich got back to winning ways (Reserves - not first team!!)

Saturday 6 April 2019

Eastern friendship

Saturday 6 April 2019, Punjab United 3 K Sports 1 - Southern Counties East, Premier Division, Elite Venue

Basic venue but one that is obviously loved , club formed by the local Sikh population but again was obvious that all the community are welcome and it is more about being proud of coming from east Gravesend.

Football wise, the home side looked poor in the first half but still went in one up, however after the break they were great to watch and added two superb solo goals.

Good game to watch at a very welcoming club.

New Saints - or today 'Hot Saints'

Wednesday 3 March 2019, Bala Town 0 New Saints 7, Welsh Premier League, Maes Tegid.

Welsh premier League, my first taste - the ground was English non-league standard- level 4? however plenty of seats and a TV gantry due to their Europa League games. Bad news, no clubhouse and beer drinking seemed off the agenda- the clubhouse next door seemed to belong to the Bowls Club.

Football wise, the visitors, the New Saints could certainly survive and thrive in the top levels of English non-league.
